Quilting for Beginners

In this six hour class (one day or two sessions), you’ll be introduced to the world of quilting and go home with a small finished placemat or mini-quilt!

Ellen will provide you with a Glossary of Common Quilting Terms and teach you about tools and tricks to help you build a solid foundation for quilting. As you sew, Ellen will talk about quilting styles, from traditional to improvisation, color theory, and best practices so you can move forward on your path to success.

Students need to know how to fill a bobbin, thread a machine, and sew straight lines. If you do not have these skills, please take Welcome to the Machine.

Students need a working sewing machine including cord, extra presser feet, foot pedal, bobbins, and machine needles (Cnote it on the registration form if you need to borrow one) and the following sewing tools. All tools and fabric are available for purchase at Sew Inviting. Students receive a 10% discount on class supplies.

  • Sewing scissors
  • Seam ripper
  • Straight pins
  • Tape measure
  • Erasable fabric pen or chalk marker

In addition, each student will need quilting specific materials. Please have these purchased before class begins.

  • 4-5 Fat Quarters (FQ = 18x22 inches) or equivalent of good quality 100% woven cotton fabric.
  • Coordinating or neutral thread and bobbins.
  • Bring any quilting tools you already own: rotary cutter, small acrylic ruler, portable cutting mat, marking pens or chalk, pins. (Classroom samples will be available to use for those new to quilting.)
If you do not come to class with your fabric chosen, there will be selections of fat quarters for you to purchase.

Students receive a 10% discount on day of class purchases.
