Quilting for Beginners

In two two three hour sessions you’ll be introduced to the world of quilting and go home with a small finished placemat or mini-quilt!

Ellen will provide you with a Glossary of Common Quilting Terms and teach you about tools and tricks to help you build a solid foundation for quilting. As you sew, Ellen will talk about quilting styles, from traditional to improvisation, color theory, and best practices so you can move forward on your path to success.

Students need to know how to fill a bobbin, thread a machine, and sew straight lines. If you do not have these skills, please take Welcome to the Machine.

Students need a working sewing machine including cord, extra presser feet, foot pedal, bobbins, and machine needles (Call or text the store if you need to borrow one for class) and the following sewing tools. All tools and fabric are available for purchase at Sew Inviting. Students receive a 15% discount on class supplies.

  • Sewing scissors
  • Seam ripper
  • Straight pins
  • Tape measure
  • Erasable fabric pen or chalk marker

In addition, each student will need quilting specific materials. Please have these purchased before class begins.

  • 4-5 Fat Quarters (FQ = 18x22 inches) or equivalent of good quality 100% woven cotton fabric.
  • Coordinating or neutral thread and bobbins.
  • Bring any quilting tools you already own: rotary cutter, small acrylic ruler, portable cutting mat, marking pens or chalk, pins. (Classroom samples will be available to use for those new to quilting.)

Students receive a 10% discount on day of class purchases.

Class space is reserved with full payment. This is a two week class. Make up classes are not guaranteed, are at the discretion of the instructor, and will be considered if it is discussed before a class is missed.

Cancellation policy: Any cancellations will be refunded for store credit minus a $25 processing fee. Within 72 hours of class starting there are no refunds.

Sew Inviting requires three students to hold a class. If three students are not registered five days before the class begins, you will be contacted to arrange a refund or reschedule to another class.

Classes are held at Sew Inviting, 647 Snelling Avenue South, Saint Paul, MN 55116. Parking is available behind and on the north side of the building.
